Beethoven may have written only one opera, but it didn't stop him composing about a dozen overtures for specific occasions. His Coriolan overture was written for a player by a contemporary, rather than the exploit and fate of Shakespeare's Coriolanus, even if the character is one and the same. It's a piece with all the robustness you might expect of Beethoven. And the Bell and Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by Helmet von Carrion is probably unrivaled when it comes to his music. You might though be a little surprised by its very unbeethan ending. And we're going to spend the rest of the day's podcast focusing on two particular passages. No amount of programming that I had any success in explaining to me what was going on in the performance. But in my defense, and I stand by it now, I simply couldn't be bothered checking who meant what by saying or dressing like this or that. Because the action is so fast moving. And there's another major and ultimately overwhelming distraction the music. It's almost impossible to focus on the minutiae of the story every step of the way when you're being served out music of this kind from the opening bars or net overture. So I'll give you the briefest assignments before playing these two extracts, but only really by way of giving you some context should you want to refer to them again. The finale of Act Two is probably 20 minutes of the finest continuous music you'll ever find in opera. And apparently even Mozart was beside himself with the outpouring of inspiration coming from his head straight to the paper. I think his notes will lose your attention. And my aim here is to urge you just to wallow in the relentless love which fills your ears. Another incorrect believer. When no key is forthcoming, he wins that the counters away to get something suitable to behind it open. And then by the time they return, Carabino has hopped out of the window. The counter is not the only one to be surprised when Susannah opens the door and immediately has to make his apologies to his wife for doubting her. But then he shows Figaro one of many anonymous letters of the folio and receiving about his wife's infidelities. At which point in comes the gardener holding the broken pocket and complaining that somebody has trampled through one of his heads.
